She is wearing what the caption indicates is a "mourning ornament" which was actually called a gronong. Made of rattan and brass rings, the Dayak women would wear these at all times, some would have such a large amount that the gronongs would resemble a corset. The Dayak people are an indigenous culture of some infamy in Borneo. Their reputation for fierceness
