Hartmann studeerde als wijnmaker aan de Universiteit van Geisenheim in Duitsland en werkte daarna voor Cantina Terlano in Zuid Tirol. In 2000 besloot hij echter om zelf wijn te maken. Zijn wijngaarden hebben een mineraalrijke bodem, met erg oude wijnstokken waarbij de diepe wortels alle unieke kenmerken van de terroir naar boven halen. Hij is een non conformist met karakter
