An 8000 strong British garrison stationed in the town of Kut, around 100 miles south of Baghdad, was besieged by the Ottoman 6th army. It was said, by historian Christopher Catherwood, to be "the worst defeat of the Allies in World War 1", with 23,000 dead or wounded on
